Great Voice of God

Today we sang, “Great Voice of God” at our seminary chapel service. We were celebrating the life of Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray, who was a brilliant legal scholar, fighting both racism and sexism. She was also the first African American woman ordained to become an Episcopal priest.

The hymn text was written by Shirley Erena Murray (no relation except in spirit!) Both women used their words to awaken compassion for injustice. Composer Mary Beth Bennett’s hymn tune provides a noble setting. The organ at the seminary resounded with full and rich colors.

Here are the words to v.1 and 5

Great voice of God that thunders through the prophets,

Sounding, resounding till we understand.

Great heart that draws the world towards your purpose,

peace, always peace with justice hand in hand.

v. 5

Little or great, our lives are for your purpose

Tuned to be more than we can ever guess.

Great voice of God, in all your good creation,

Make us your instruments of blessedness!
